Remember when, depending on your age, your teacher or your kiddos' teachers would say, "You cannot use the Internet to research your paper?”

That directive, once a common refrain in classrooms across the country, seems antiquated today.

We've moved from a skepticism of the Internet to embracing it almost exclusively for research, learning, and administration. In an era where school governance bodies require the use of funds to enhance access to tech-ready education, we stand on the cusp of another educational revolution: the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically Large Language Models, into our classrooms.

 The Shift to Tech-Ready Education

The push towards tech-ready education isn't just about ensuring every student has a laptop or access to the Internet. It's about preparing students for an increasingly digital world. A vivid example of this shift is the requirement under Title IV, where schools must demonstrate the use of funding to increase access to well-rounded, safe, tech-ready educational experiences, particularly for underrepresented student groups. This move is not just about equity; it's about readiness for the future.

AI in Schools: Beyond the "No Use" Policy

Many schools and districts, wary of the unknowns surrounding AI, have adopted a "no use" policy towards AI technologies. While the intent behind such policies—to protect students—is understandable, they may inadvertently hamper student preparedness for future careers. AI is not a distant future technology; it is here, evolving, and impacting various sectors. Education should not be an exception. It's crucial for educational institutions to reconsider their stance on AI, exploring its potential to enrich both teaching and learning experiences.

Preparing Students for an AI-Driven World

The need for AI education goes beyond just learning how to use new technology. It's about ensuring that students can navigate an AI-driven world safely and ethically. This includes understanding how to interact with AI, from drafting effective prompts for search and ideation to recognizing the ethical implications of AI technologies. Just as we've taught digital citizenship in the context of the Internet, we must now expand our educational frameworks to include AI literacy.

During a recent preparation for a Title I, II, III, IV audit at a school, one requirement was to prove that funding had been used to enhance tech-ready educational experiences, emphasizing the need for schools to integrate AI into their curricula thoughtfully. This is not just a compliance issue; it's about future-proofing our students' education.

 AI: Enhancing Educational Experiences

AI can significantly personalize learning, provide real-time feedback, and make education more accessible. For teachers, AI tools can offer insights into student progress, suggest resources, and automate administrative tasks, allowing more time for teaching. AI can tailor learning experiences’ needs, pace, and learning styles for students, making education more engaging and effective.

“No Use Policy” is No Use

As we navigate these early days of AI integration in education, it's clear that adopting a "no use" AI policy will not prepare our students for the inevitable future where AI plays a significant role in our lives and careers. Instead, schools and districts should focus on how AI can be used safely and ethically to improve education and prepare students for the opportunities and challenges of an AI-driven world. The future of education is not just about using technology; it's about understanding, shaping, and leveraging it to enhance learning for all students.
