Five Critical Insights from Dr. Michael Howell of Google, shared with the AIGG team

At a recent gathering in Seattle, a good friend of AIGG had the pleasure of hearing from some of the brightest minds in the field of AI and medicine. Among them was Dr. Michael Howell, the Chief Clinical Officer at Google. Dr. Howell leads a team of clinical experts dedicated to improving the quality, safety, and experience of healthcare through technology. His distinguished career and expertise set the stage for a compelling presentation on the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence and generative AI.

Here are the five key takeaways from his talk, relayed in discussion with our dear friend:

1. Unmatched Speed

AI is advancing at an unprecedented pace. The speed at which we are seeing new developments is nothing short of remarkable. Innovations that used to take years are now happening in months, reshaping industries faster than ever before.

2. A Different Kind of Revolution

This wave of AI isn't just a continuation of past advancements—it's a whole new type of technology. The capabilities and applications of generative AI are fundamentally different from traditional AI, opening doors to possibilities we hadn't even imagined - given the ability to converse in natural language with gen AI.

3. Novel Technology, Novel Risks

With new technology comes new risks. As we venture into uncharted territories with generative AI, we must navigate unanticipated challenges and ethical considerations. Understanding and mitigating these risks is crucial as we integrate AI into various aspects of our lives. (At AIGG - we wholeheartedly agree!)

4. Heightened Expectations

People now expect AI to be a part of their daily experiences. Whether it's through personalized recommendations, virtual assistants, or automated processes, the demand for AI-driven solutions is growing. This expectation is driving rapid advancements and adoption across sectors. We see that every day.

5. Transformative Impact Across Markets

AI's influence is set to be felt across all markets, but none more so than healthcare. The potential for AI to revolutionize diagnostics, treatment planning, and patient care is immense. As we harness this technology, we can expect significant improvements in healthcare outcomes and efficiency.

Our friend also highlighted a discussion around the staggering acceleration of AI development.

In just 14 months, we've progressed from AI 1.0 to AI 3.0.

To put this into perspective, consider Moore's Law, which predicts the doubling of computing power approximately every two years. The pace of AI evolution is far outstripping even this rapid advancement, signaling a transformative era ahead.

As we continue to explore and develop AI, staying informed and engaged with these advancements is essential. The insights shared by Dr. Howell serve as a reminder of the exciting and sometimes challenging journey we are on with artificial intelligence. The future holds incredible potential, and it's up to us to shape it responsibly.
