The WHY behind the AI Governance Group

Part of our brand is to preserve and protect nature in a world of technology. Join us here for the earth.

Its recently occurred to us that we’ve not truly described – exactly – the Why behind our group.

When in person, it’s easy (and quick) to explain. And for those who know us, it all makes sense.

Ethical Understanding and Use of AI is Critical

People are truly resonating with the notion that a group of business-minded leaders, attorneys, risk management professionals, anthropologists, brand shapers and educators can come together to support the ethical use of AI tools in business.

But it occurred to us that we’ve not truly described – exactly – the Why… of our group here.

Before we go further, I’d recommend everyone stop right now and go read this Harvard Business Review article, Ethics in the Age of AI by Reid Blackman.

It describes – in compelling detail and clarity – what’s pulled us together to create content, education and training and some very important governance tools around the use of AI.

What I feel is incredibly important about the HBR article is the notion of ethics, and how – too often – businesses and technologists simply refuse to use the word, much less the notion, of ethics when building or leveraging technology.

“This behavior – of replacing the word ‘ethics’ with some other less precise term – is widespread…. Corporations heard the call, ‘We want AI ethics!’ Their distorted response is, ‘Yes, we, too, are for responsible AI!’” – Reid Blackman

Once you’ve read the article, you will truly understand what we aim to address here at the AI Governance Group:

  • We are in the beginnings of a very rapid technology transformation

  • AI software tools have been built by technologists - largely by men, mostly from Silicon Valley, Israel and China

  • The newest AI Large Language Models have been trained by content scraped from the web, mostly in English, certainly biased in many ways

  • The newest tools are being beta tested and further trained by us every day. And for those who don’t live in technology, that means they’re not ready for prime time.

“‘Machine Learning’ is, at its simplest, software that learns by example. And just as people learn to discriminate on the basis of race, gender, ethnicity, or other protected attributes by following examples around them, software does, too.” – Reid Blackman

Which leads us to our WHY:

We’ve come together to protect people, their intellectual property, their organizations; and to preserve and protect truth in the Age of AI. We do so through ethical educational content, governance policies, and training.

So far, our reception has been one of welcome and gratitude. And we reflect that consistently, we hope.

As we move forward, we’ll provide a little more of our background in our quest for ethics, the preservation of truth, and our creation of actionable intelligence as we’ve all plunged into this latest technology transformation.

Join us in a fearlessly ethical, optimistic journey into the future!
